At the moment, there are Tasmanians who are forced, against their wishes, to suffer through incurable, irreversible medical conditions. People should have the right to make their own end-of-life choices.

Too many Tasmanians are living with persistent and intolerable pain and being denied the right to die with dignity. These terminally ill Tasmanians, who can find no relief through palliative care, deserve to have access to dignified choices at the end of their lives.

In 2010, 2013 and 2016 the Greens led on or co-sponsored Voluntary Assisted Dying Bills, these bills did not pass.

Independent Member for Mersey in the Legislative Council, Mike Gaffney MLC, has begun consulting on End-of-Life Choices (Voluntary Assisted Dying) Bill 2020, which he plans to table and bring on for debate in the Legislative Council in August this year.

We have another chance to legalise Voluntary Assisted Dying in Tasmania.

What Can I Do?

Write to your local Member in the House of Assembly and Legislative Council and ask them to support the Bill.

Speech on Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2016

Andrea Dawkins - I rise with full support for the bill brought to the House by Ms O'Connor and Ms Giddings.  This bill seeks to do these things:  provide a last resort for terminally ill and chronically ill patients who are competent and whose competency can be attested to; to give clarity for medical practitioners through an independent registrar with the responsibility to maintain records and review all assisted deaths.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2016 Tabled

Cassy O'Connor MP - Madam Speaker, I support seeking of leave to suspend Standing Orders so Ms Giddings and I can table together the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2016. In my experience in this place there is plenty of precedent for the co-sponsoring of legislation.
