Call for Professional Development for Teachers in Disability Education

Andrea Dawkins MP to move—
That the House:—
(a) the recently released results of the second annual Teachers View Survey from the Tasmanian Disability Education Reform Lobby;
(b) that over 500 teachers statewide took part in the survey, with a whopping 90 per cent indicating Tasmania’s disability education system is inadequate;
(c) that the survey also revealed 44 per cent of teachers who took part said they had not participated in any disability specific training despite most also stating they had taught students living with disabilities in 2016;
(d) that, sadly, almost 40 per cent of those surveyed also said they thought the disability education system had changed for the worse in the 12 months up until August 2016;
(e) that less than 10 of over 500 teachers surveyed believe disability education in Tasmania is adequate;
(f) that the Lobby’s 2016 Parent Satisfaction Survey results revealed that the satisfaction level of Government schools had also dropped to a low of 32 per cent;
(g) that although the Minister for Education, Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, has repeatedly stated the Liberal Government is committed to ensuring every Tasmanian student has access to quality education, the Lobby’s founder, Kristen Desmond, believes the results of second survey shows resources in the area are still significantly lacking; and
(h) the further statement made by the Minister for Education that the Liberal Government is “focusing on improving the skills of teachers and school staff to better support the needs of students with disabilities”.
(2) Calls on Minister for Education, Hon. Jeremy Rockliff MP, to make good on the Liberal election promise to improve support for students living with a disability by immediately implementing adequate, relevant professional development and training for all teachers.
