Fossil Free UTAS Students Show True Grit for Climate

21 Oct 2015

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Climate Change spokesperson

University of Tasmania students staging a sit-in outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office are true climate champions.

Their commitment to ensuring UTAS divests its climate-poisoning fossil-fuel investments is based on the science and ethics.

Like every person on the planet, these young Tasmanians have a right to a safe climate.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens and every Tasmanian who believes all our public institutions should invest ethically, I express deep gratitude.

An increasing number of learning institutions and investors around the world are divesting from fossil fuels.  UTAS should join this global movement, demonstrating its commitment to meaningful climate action.

I would also like to encourage the Vice-Chancellor to meet with these young people.  He should be impressed by their courage and spirit, and invite them in for a chat about how UTAS will move towards 100% ethical investment.
