Greens Call for Tasmanian Greyhound Racing Ban
Parliamentary Activity - Tuesday, 23 August 2016
Andrea Dawkins MP to move—
That the House:—
(a) the greyhound racing industry continues to kill dogs at an alarming rate;
(b) that records show 1,600 dogs have been reported dead through injury or illness, or a lack of suitability for racing or rehoming since July 2013;
(c) that records of the death toll from the first half of 2016 show 242 dogs have been reported killed, through injury, illness, or a lack of suitability for racing or rehoming;
(d) that 67 dogs have been killed in 2016 alone because they were not suitable for racing, and that records indicate they were also not suitable for rehoming;
(e) that, to date, no reason has been given as to why 43 dogs have been killed so far in 2016 because they were not suitable for the Greyhound Adoption Program; and
(f) that the number of greyhounds currently being deemed unsuitable for rehoming renders Tasracing’s mission for zero wastage problematic, if not impossible.
(2) Calls on the Premier, Hon. Will Hodgman MP, to admit that it is farcical that the greyhound racing industry is capable of reform and to legislate to end this taxpayer funded cruelty as New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory have done.
