Ms O'CONNOR question to MINISTER for RESOURCES, Mr BARNETT
House Misled Over Native Forest Logging Subsidies
Parliamentary Activity - Thursday, 22 September 2016
Thursday 22 September 2016
Cassy O'Connor MP to move—
That the House:—
(1) Notes the comments of the Minister for Resources, Hon. Guy Barnett MP, on 25 August 2016, and on several occasions since then that there are “thousands” of jobs in the native forest industry.
(2) Acknowledges the analysis of Tasmania's forestry sector undertaken by the Department of State Growth in October 2014, which states there were 1155 people employed in the native forestry sector in November 2013, down from 3459 in August 2006.
(3) Further notes:—
(a) the claims of the Minister for Resources in relation to the Macquarie woodchip export proponent that “no government money has been, or will be, provided to either of the successful proponents”;
(b) that if transhipped from the mainland, as appears to be likely, the proponent will be eligible for approximately $10 million per annum in subsidies from the freight equalisation scheme;
(c) that the freight equalisation scheme is taxpayer funded; and
(d) that the Minister for Resources, in a media release on 15 September 2016, defended the right of native forestry exporters to access the freight equalisation scheme.
(4) Questions whether the Minister for Resources can get any facts in his portfolio correct.
(5) Calls on the Minister to either admit misleading the house over native forest logging subsidies, or categorically rule out either of the successful southern residues solution proponents will be able to access the freight equalisation scheme.
