Housing Investment Step in the Right Direction

23 Sep 2015

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Human Services spokesperson

The release of the Affordable Housing Strategy and the investment of $13.5M this year won't deal with the critical supply issues in housing, but it's a reasonable start.

There are close to 3000 Tasmanians on the waiting list for homes which has skyrocketed under this government.  Many are living in highly unstable situations and some have no place to call home.

It is refreshing to see Treasurer Gutwein unlocking the vault door and investing a fraction of the GST windfall in to its intended recipients, Tasmanians in need.

In two State Budgets so far he failed to do so.

The plan also outlines the transfer of public land to private developers, but is silent on whether title to public housing properties will be handed over as well.

In many ways, the Strategy continues the good work Housing Tasmania has been undertaking over a long period.

Sadly, there is still a massive funding shortfall as a result of the Federal Government abandoning the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) which helped the Labor Green government deliver 1500 new affordable homes.
