Jobs Data Points to Worrying Trend Under the Liberals

17 Mar 2016

Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Treasury spokesperson

The latest unemployment data reveals that the Liberals’ promised ‘Brighter Future’ has failed to materialise, with the fifth consecutive month of a fall in job numbers across the State.

These disturbing jobs’ statistics are proof that the Hodgman government can’t hope to fix an economic problem by blowing hot air at it.

Unemployment in Tasmania has risen to 6.9%, with 800 fewer Tasmanians in work than there were last month and a total of 3 850 jobs lost since last September.

The Liberals promised to create 10 000 jobs over four years.  They are on path to failure at the expense of Tasmanians needing meaningful, secure jobs.

More than half of the new jobs the Premier said had been created since his government took office have now been lost.

At the same time, the number of bankruptcies in Tasmania rose by 23% between December 2014 and December 2015, with 272 fewer businesses in Tasmania over that period.

This is an unfolding social tragedy and we need to hear more than spin and hot air from this government.  We need to know whether they actually have a plan to generate jobs in the new industries, and to re-engineer our economy to maximise the opportunities for prosperity through a genuinely future-focussed economic plan.

If the Premier wants any advice on what the jobs of the future look like, we are happy to advise him because he is clearly getting poor advice right now.
