That the House:—
(a) On 16 May 2016 the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) announced it had accepted a court enforceable undertaking from Careers Australia Group Limited (Careers Australia);
(b) the ACCC’s view that conduct of Careers Australia and its agents was unconscionable and in breach of the Australian Consumer Law (ACL);
(c) the conduct in question included door-to-door marketers misrepresenting that the courses were free, misrepresenting that the courses would allow consumers to find employment and offering inducements such as iPads and laptops and claiming they were provided for free;
(d) significant Commonwealth money went to Careers Australia to fund the courses it was delivering;
(e) Careers Australia has admitted its conduct was in breach of the law and agreed to cancel enrolments of students who have not completed a unit of study, repay the Commonwealth any amounts received as a result of those enrolments and invite other students who may have been misled that they may be eligible to have their enrolment and debt cancelled;
(f) as of 16 May 2016 Careers Australia had repaid $44.3 million to the Commonwealth; and
(g) the $23,500 donation from Careers Australia to the Tasmanian Liberal Party last financial year.
(2) Calls on the Government to distance itself from the unconscionable conduct by ensuring the $23,500 donation is refunded from the Tasmanian Liberal Party to Careers Australia. (25 May
