Moratorium on Coal Mining

28 October 2015

NOTICE OF MOTION

WEDNESDAY 28 October 2015

Ms O’Connor to move—That the House:—

(1)   Hears the urgent call of the His Excellency Anote Tong, President of the Republic of Kiribati, who has written to world leaders ahead of the Paris Climate talks, asking them to back a moratorium on coal mining.

(2)   Commends the 61 prominent Australians, including former RBA governor Bernie Fraser, 2003 Australian of the Year Fiona Stanley AC, Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty AC, Indigenous campaigner Amelia Telford, Robert Manne, Carmen Lawrence, J.M. Coetzee, Bishop George Browning, Adam Spencer, Tasmania's own Booker Prize winner, Richard Flanagan and many more who have signed an open letter in support of President Tong's call for a moratorium on coal.

(3)   Understands that climate change is a matter of life and death for many, especially many Pacific island countries, who lie at only metres above sea level.

(4)   Notes with deep disappointment comments from the Prime Minister, Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, a once climate change believer and activist that the Australian Government would not advocate on behalf of our Pacific neighbours.

(5)   Calls on the Premier Hon Will Hodgman MP and all members of his Cabinet to plead with their Canberra colleagues to reconsider their position and help our neighbours who have the rising seas on their doorstep by supporting a moratorium on new coal mines.
