MWCC Moves In on kunanyi, Facing Public Opposition

12 Jun 2019

Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader and Member for Clark

The 6,000 or more Tasmanians who gathered in protest in the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington last May stand ready to defend the mountain from the Mt Wellington Cableway Company and their enablers in both the major parties.

The proponent has lodged a Development Application with Hobart City Council today.

MWCC has been encouraged and enabled by the Liberals since even before they took office when, in opposition, they moved in Parliament to neuter the Wellington Park Trust’s powers and succeeded with Labor’s support.

Then, in 2017, Parliament was presented with the facilitation Bill which, again, had the support of both parties and laid the foundation for privatization of the Pinnacle for a commercial cable car.

In lodging this DA, the proponent is giving the bird to the thousands who gathered in kunanyi’s foothills a year ago and the many thousands more Tasmanians who love the mountain just the way it is.

Minister Gutwein gave the proponent the tick to drill inside the Wellington Park.  Drilling large holes in this fragile, beautiful and public place would be a desecration.  It will be fought by the mountain’s many defenders.

We stand with Aboriginal Tasmanians and everyone who regards the mountain as sacred and worthy of fighting to protect.
