Sustainable Timbers Tasmania Fails to Secure FSC, Again
Media Release - Thursday, 26 September 2019
Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Forests spokesperson
Forest Stewardship Council auditors delivered their assessment report to ‘Sustainable Timbers Tasmania’ on the last Friday in May this year, four months ago.
It is clear that, once again, Tasmania’s forestry GBE has failed to secure FSC certification.
In Question Time this morning, Resources Minister, Guy Barnett, dodged and weaved on the Greens’ question specific to FSC certification.
The Minister could not bring himself to tell the truth.
The truth is that the Liberals’ forestry policy to ramp up native forest logging and send the industry in to 356 000 hectares of reserve quality forest has killed off ‘Sustainable Timbers Tasmania’s’ bid for FSC.
Swift Parrot, Masked Owl, Tasmanian devil and habitat for a range of threatened endemic species is being logged to this day under the Liberals, rainforest reserves are on the chopping block, and from 8 April next year some of the most carbon dense forests on Earth will be open to logging.
Little wonder the Forest Stewardship Council has again rejected Forestry Tasmania/STT’s bid for prized certification.
