Tasmania must be ready for more fires
Parliamentary Activity - Wednesday, 16 September 2015
That this House:
1. Notes the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre warning that Tasmania’s eastern half could face a longer bushfire season at a higher than normal risk this coming summer.
2. Notes past fire chief Mike Brown’s warnings that climate change had led to an increase in the number of lightning strike fires, a longer fire season and more days of high fire danger.
3. Calls on the government to continue implementation of the Climate Smart Tasmania policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% on 1990 levels by 2020 and to reject internal Liberal party climate denialism.
4. Calls on the government to fund land management and fire agencies at the level required to prepare for and adapt to the increased fire risk due to climate change.
