Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service

16 June 2015

NOTICE OF MOTION

Tuesday, 16 June 2015

Cassy O’Connor MP on tomorrow to move -

That this House:

1.     Understands that the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service has been providing legal assistance and support to the Tasmanian Aboriginal community for 42 years;

2.     Notes with shame the decision of Federal Attorney General George Brandis to not renew a five year funding agreement with the Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service, and instead fund a Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service to cover Tasmania;

3.     Acknowledges that Tasmania was the only state not to have its funding agreement for Aboriginal Legal Services renewed, a massive sign of disrespect for Aboriginal Tasmanians and a blow to the principle of self-determination;

4.     Agrees that Victoria is not Tasmania, in the same respect as the Victorian Aboriginal community is not the Tasmanian Aboriginal community;

5.     Condemns the Federal Liberal Government for seeking to disenfranchise a people who have suffered enough;

6.     Agrees that the Federal decision poses a risk to justice outcomes for Tasmania’s First People;

7.     Notes that Premier Hodgman is due to meet with representatives of the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre on Thursday 18 June next; and

8.     Strongly urges Premier Hodgman and Attorney General Goodwin not to fall at their first hurdle in resetting the relationship with Tasmania’s Aboriginal people by letting their federal colleagues get away with this injustice.
