The Greens welcome the progress between the AEU Executive and the government on wages policy.  These negotiations have been drawn out, and largely not conducted in good faith by the Hodgman Government.

The AEU Executive’s acceptance of the offer will hopefully resolve the serious concerns of teachers about conditions and pay.

The end of the impasse must also ensure students’ best interests are served.

We sincerely hope the offer ensures the large workloads of Tasmania’s teachers are meaningfully relieved.  Without real workload relief, teachers, students and their educational outcomes suffer.

While we don’t know the full details of the offer, the government’s claim it will have no budget bottom line impact raises red flags. The Treasurer must outline where the “efficiency savings” will be coming from.

Educators are critical to the future of all young Tasmanians, and we wait to hear from the AEU’s membership about their views on the offer.
