Minister Rockliff needs to expand the terms of reference for the Marine Farming Planning Review process to focus on the triple-bottom line. It should include a proper and independent assessment of the social, environmental and economic impacts of fish farms.

The salmon farming industry has said publicly that it intends to double the size of its industry by 2030. That can't be at the expense of our marine environment and other industries.

If the Liberals are serious about getting a social licence for fish farming, then the community requires an assurance this is not just a 'tick-a-box' assessment. It's clear East Coast communities don't want salmon pens in Okehampton Bay or beyond in the Mercury Passage.

The Liberals have an obligation to ensure jobs are protected and we have a sustainable industry, that's regulated so it can survive for the long-term. That's only possible if it has consumer confidence, which means a healthy waterway and a supportive community.

Both the Government and the Opposition have ignored the calls of the community for a proper regulatory process, and today have voted against the Greens' Motion.
