The Greens welcome the Premier’s advice that parents should keep their children at home from school from Monday if they can.

The Premier’s announcement will reassure many Tasmanian families who have been anxious about the coronavirus and the inconsistency in the state’s physical distancing restrictions.

We understand and support the government’s intention to keep schools open for the children of healthcare workers. We all need those people to be able to continue their lifesaving work in these difficult days.

Tasmania’s hardworking teachers will be doing all they can to help parents support their children’s schooling. The transition to home education won’t be easy, but it is critical to put the health and safety of all Tasmanians first.

Today’s announcement makes a clear statement, and ends the mixed messages about physical distancing.

We hope the Premier’s announcement today leaves no Tasmanian in any doubt about the seriousness of COVID-19. We must all put the health of our loved ones and our whole community first and take proper precautions.

We reiterate the message coming from government – stay at home if you can, for the safety of all Tasmanians.
