The Tasmanian Greens have released the second part of their Energy Strategy for Tasmania. Generating a New Renewable Wave is a blueprint for securing market investment in the renewable future.

Generating a New Renewable Wave focuses on how we can secure investment in medium and large-scale renewable generation. A central part of this plan will be the establishment of RenewTAS, an independent statutory authority.

RenewTAS would work with existing generators, coordinate technological advances, and oversee the establishment of renewable energy generation projects around the state.

Another key part of the blueprint is using a “reverse auction” process where companies compete for a contract to supply electricity, and which effectively drives down the price government pays for power.

RenewTAS would start with an initial auction for 600MW of new renewable generation. This is a target that is entirely achievable.

The Liberals' hands-free approach to managing the electricity market has been a disaster. Yesterday’s announcement by Bell Bay that they will reduce electricity use by 10% shows just how serious the energy crisis has become.

Minister Groom has done nothing for two years, other than stick with the status quo, as if there's nothing changing with our climate and the renewable energy market.

The Minister’s lack of leadership means we haven't created investment conditions for potential renewable generators. Tasmania is missing out on the billions of dollars that are being spent in other states, and that could be going into jobs and increasing our security.

The Greens have been working hard to provide the details the Minister needs to make sure Tasmania is in front of the renewable generation wave that is towering over Australia, not behind it.

Our plan will make sure Tasmanians have a secure, clean, fair and prosperous energy future.
