The Greens strongly support the Fair Funding campaign launched today by Tasmania’s 14 key community service organisations.

The community sector is crucial to Tasmanians. They are so often the ones left to support people in need when nobody else will. Their work makes a huge difference to the lives of thousands.

In the midst of a housing crisis, with the cost of living skyrocketing, demand for these organisations is growing as more Tasmanians find themselves in poverty. On top of increasing demand, the sector is itself facing massive cost increases, and is struggling to keep up.

It’s critical the State Government heed the calls from community service providers, and to meet their funding needs at the upcoming State Budget. Jeremy Rockliff must support those on the frontline, picking up the pieces of his policy failures.

Refusing to listen to these organisations will have direct consequences for the Tasmanian community and those most in need. It will mean people being turned away from essential services, and even more people being left behind.

We urge the Premier to put aside his out-of-touch stadium folly, and listen to the plea from the community sector. This is where his attention should be –supporting these basic and essential services.
