Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader
As Greens Leader, I am proud to be standing on a unity ticket with Jeremy Rockliff and Rebecca White today to back in a Yes vote on the Voice referendum.
As a nation, and an island community, we are held back by a terrible colonial history we have yet to reckon with. This failure over multiple generations and governments diminishes our national character.
We can do so much better as a country.
A Yes vote and a Voice to Parliament will be just the beginning of repairing the profound damage of the past and charting a new, inclusive, more just future.
A Yes vote will be another step towards Truth-telling and Treaty.
Once established, and the Greens hope with strong representation from Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the body that gives First Nations people a Voice to Parliament will carry the moral authority of the nation to deliver meaningful change.
I believe that, across the country among the vast majority of non-Aboriginal people, there’s a tangible yearning to make amends for the grievous wrongs of our colonial past and present.
This will surely carry the Yes vote.
