Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens Leader
The Greens, like the majority of Tasmanians, appreciate the efforts of the Gutwein Government and public health officials to keep Tasmanians safe in 2020.
We are worried, however, in light of growing COVID outbreaks in NSW and Victoria, that the restrictions being put in place are not cautious enough.
It would be a tragedy if all the hard work and sacrifices Tasmanians made to contain the virus were undone by a more lax approach.
Now is not the time to take our foot off the brakes.
It’s legitimate to ask why there aren’t stronger restrictions on travellers from greater NSW, and at least some restrictions on Victoria.
Is short term economic benefit being prioritised over community health and longer term economic health?
Tasmanians concerned about the health of their loved ones, and the public hospital system’s capacity to cope with a local outbreak, have a right to know.
They also have the right to feel safe as islanders in the middle of a raging global pandemic.
