All Tasmanians should feel safe in their community. Strong firearms laws ensure people are protected.
The Tasmanian community, more than any other, understand how important strong gun laws are.
Gun laws must always put public safety first, before convenience and business or sporting interests.
Just days before the last state election, the Liberals were exposed making a secret deal with the firearms lobby to weaken Tasmania’s gun laws. It was subsequently revealed Labor had also proposed weakening firearms laws.
This can’t happen again. Voters have the right to know before they head to the ballot box what each party is planning for the state’s gun laws.
Tasmanians do not want any changes to gun laws that would reduce public safety.
Our plan will strengthen protections for communities and individuals. It repeals minors’ permits, bans 3D printing of weapons, improves safety by increasing resources to Firearms Services for thorough background checks and development of a mental health assessment protocol with medical practitioners.
The Greens reaffirm their commitment to the National Firearms Agreement and every one of the individual resolutions within it. The only reason a state government should ever advocate for a change to the NFA, including to make states’ firearms laws uniform, is to strengthen the agreement further to increase public safety.
