Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader

he Greens are responding to the community demand for leadership and action on climate, and will be tabling the Safe Climate Bill 2020 in State Parliament next week.

We recognise the critical role of government in keeping communities safe in a time of climate emergency.

The Safe Climate Bill 2020 is a comprehensive plan to help Tasmanians reduce emissions across the economy and society in a staged, achievable way. It establishes the legislative framework to protect and grow our carbon stores and ensure Tasmania is climate ready.

The Safe Climate Bill is the legislative backbone of a Tasmanian Green New Deal. It establishes a robust governance framework to drive economic opportunity, new jobs and a fairer, healthier society.

Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Climate Change spokesperson

Our Bill establishes expertise in a Safe Climate Commission, with Parliamentary oversight and accountability, to drive climate-focussed policy and meaningful action. It will hasten industry transition, drive innovation in a low carbon future, and support communities to adapt.

This is the work Parliaments across the world should be doing to secure a safe and sustainable future for their people.

As it has with renewables, Tasmania has an opportunity to lead the nation. This is a clear, evidence-based and achievable path forward.

Our Bill is a model for other states as they work towards a safe climate future.

The climate emergency demands ambitious, urgent action that drives sustainable economic growth for a safe future. That’s exactly what the Safe Climate Bill provides.

We hope all Tasmanian MPs are listening to climate experts, and will support the Greens’ Safe Climate Bill 2020.
