On behalf of the Tasmanian Greens, I was proud to table our landmark Safe Climate Bill 2020 today. This is landmark legislation for climate action.

We know very well COVID-19 is the most pressing issue in the minds of most Tasmanians right at the moment – and before our Parliament. The Safe Climate Bill has been months in preparation, and we will be bringing it on for debate when MPs are able to address issues outside of the current pandemic.

The Bill establishes expertise in a Safe Climate Commission, and Parliamentary oversight and accountability, to drive climate-focussed policy and meaningful action.

Tasmania has already made significant moves in renewable energy, and we need to use this advantage to hasten the electrification of other sectors, such as transport and agriculture. This Bill provides a clear, evidence-based and achievable path forward.

Other approaches to climate action for Tasmania have advocated a net zero emissions target for 20 or 30 years’ hence. However, that target was already achieved in Tasmania in 2016, and scientists tell us we need to be doing so much more.

Far away targets do not press current governments to take meaningful action now.

The climate emergency demands immediate ambitious action to drive sustainable economic growth for a safe future. That’s exactly what the Safe Climate Bill provides.

This is the work Parliaments across the world need to be doing to secure a safe and sustainable future for their people. We hope all Tasmanian MPs are listening to climate experts, and will support the Greens’ Safe Climate Bill 2020.
