The Greens welcome news that the government is finally planning to implement a container deposit scheme for Tasmania.

The community and the Greens at local, state and federal levels have been calling for a Tasmanian container deposit scheme for decades. While most other states have slowly committed and rolled out this critical environmental policy, Tasmania has lagged behind.

We are pleased the Liberals have finally listened to the Boomerang Alliance, Clean Up Australia, scout troupes and local environmental groups.

The government has finally seen a container deposit scheme for the huge benefit it will provide to the marine environment, land ecosystems, as well as the community as a whole.

For the last five years the Greens have been calling on the Hodgman Government to commit to implementing a container deposit scheme, and we are pleased they have finally bowed to the evidence and community will.

We look forward to hearing more about the scheme and seeing the legislation that will be brought before the Parliament.
