Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader
The Greens welcome the Premier’s commitment, following Greens’ questions in Estimates today, to act on the Tasmanian Law Reform Commission’s report on harmful, unscientific conversion practices.
So-called ‘conversion therapy’ causes profound harm to LGBTIQ+ people. It is homophobic, religious whackery dressed up as therapy.
Conversion practices are outdated, harmful and often barbaric. They tell LGBTIQ+ people there is something wrong with them, that their sexual and gender identity can be ‘cured’. This is traumatic to already marginalised people.
All medical or psychological treatment must be based on evidence and science, not dogma. Conversion therapy has no place in a modern, humane Tasmania and we are pleased to hear the Premier acknowledge that fact.
A person’s sexuality is not a mental health condition, that must be reflected in law and LGBTIQ+ people must be protected from religious whackery dressed up as therapy.
