Premier Will Hodgman must commit to raising the Chinese government's continuing human rights abuses against the Tibetan people if Chinese President Xi Jinping visits Tasmania later this year.

"Any visit by Mr Xi will be a real test of Mr Hodgman's leadership and humanity," said Greens Member for Franklin Nick McKim MP.

"If we are serious about human rights we have to take every opportunity to stand up for them, and if that means Mr Hodgman having the courage to raise the Chinese government's continued murder and torture of Tibetan people, then so be it."

"Recent reports that Chinese police opened fire on unarmed Tibetan protestors on 12 August, with five Tibetans killed in the shooting and later in custody, make it even more important that Mr Hodgman make it very clear to Mr Xi that he condemns the Chinese government's actions," Mr McKim said.
