One of the most ill-thought and potentially harmful pieces of legislation is now sitting in limbo in the Legislative Council.
It is well past time for the Premier to step in and remove the Anti-Discrimination (Amendment) Bill 2016 from his government’s legislative agenda.
Premier Hodgman told Tasmanians weakening anti-discrimination laws was needed in the lead up to a plebiscite on marriage equality. Given it's been voted down in the Federal Parliament, their motivational facade for this legislation has been demolished.
This Bill doesn't have the support of a majority of upper House members. It doesn’t have community support, and it certainly doesn't have the support of key stakeholders including the Law Society and LGBTI Tasmanians. It should be dumped as soon as possible.
The Premier must admit he's made a mistake and take this nasty Bill off the books. It's currently sitting in limbo causing stress and anguish to LGBTI Tasmanians, their family and friends, knowing there's a harmful piece of legislation sitting on the books.
It's up to the Premier to say enough is enough and withdraw the legislation, so we can get on with other important issues Tasmanians want dealt with by Parliament.
