Labor Abandons Casino and Venue Workers in Secret MOU with THA

Tasmanian Labor has abandoned employees at casinos, pubs and clubs in its indecent haste to lock in gambling industry donations and support.

Its secret MOU with the gambling industry’s peak body commits Labor to go soft on workers’ rights, with an emphasis on education, rather than enforcement, for employers who rip off their workers by not paying award wages.

It’s disgraceful that a political party notionally formed to advocate for workers rights would sign a secret agreement with industry to not use enforcement measures on big businesses that fail to meet award obligations for staff.

Rebecca White also announced yesterday that she has struck a ‘number of agreements with industry’ over the last few years.  All these are apparently secret, as was the THA MOU until yesterday.

How many other Tasmanian workers has the Labor Party sold out to corporate interests behind closed doors?

Tasmanians deserve more from the Labor party than an extension of the Liberals’ backbench.
