Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader and Animal Welfare spokesperson
Labor’s Shadow Racing Minister, Dean Winter, is pushing the new Racing Minister to entrench cruelty in the greyhound racing industry.
Mr Winter is apparently more worried about rushing animal welfare and integrity investigations than he is about the causes of the industry’s waning public support.
Increasingly Tasmanians, who pay tens of millions to subsidise the industry, understand it is both cruel and dodgy.
That’s why the spotlight is finally on the industry and its toothless watchdog, the Office of Racing Integrity (ORI).
Instead of taking cheap shots at the Greens and Independents who are vocal on the industry’s many failings, Mr Winter should commit to helping the industry do better.
The Greens believe greyhound racing should be banned, but if Mr Winter believes it has a future, he should first admit it needs a massive cleanup and ORI needs to bare its fangs more.
We hope Minister Ogilvie will ignore Mr Winter’s bleating.
