Cassy O’Connor MP | Greens’ Leader and Housing spokesperson
The Labor Party's announcement on three new builds to tackle the housing crisis is woefully inadequate.
Ensuring all Tasmanians who need a home can find one will require much greater government investment in affordable housing as well as structural change to rein in the explosion of Airbnb and to require that new housing developments have a component of affordable housing.
On these issues, the Greens have led with a strong suite of initiatives to build more homes, make it easier for first home buyers to get in to the market and take on Airbnb so more homes are available for rental.
With Hobart now the hardest capital city in the country to find a rental property and locals being priced out of the real estate market, Labor's policy is just tinkering around the edges.
If their policy is the result of research and conversations, they haven't done enough of either.
All parties contesting this election should follow the Greens' lead and put forward significant housing initiatives that will have a substantial, positive impact on housing availability and affordability for Tasmanians who need a home. Let's hope this is just the first step from Labor.
