The Greens welcome the Commissioner for Children and Young People’s Listening to Children and Young People in Tasmania Report 2019.

As Tasmania makes its way out of the COVID-19, listening to children and young people must be front and centre. We urge the Premier act on what almost 200 people involved in the CCYP Ambassador Program this year are telling their leaders.

The Commissioner for Children’s report makes it clear we need to do better by Tasmania’s young people. They are calling out for more mental health support, educational opportunities, equality, but most critical of all, climate action.

The decisions leaders make in the coming months and years will frame the lives of Tasmania’s young people.

What young Tasmanians need is a fresh start. They need policy and lawmakers to put their future first in their decision making - they need a Green New Deal.

This report was prepared before coronavirus hit Tasmania and we know young people are also feeling anxious about the pandemic. Their hopes, dreams and fears hang in the balance of the decisions their leaders make.

As we rebuild our social structures, future generations must be front of mind at every step.
