In voting against the Greens’ move for the Parliament to declare a climate emergency, the Liberals have betrayed Tasmanians - particularly young people. This island doesn’t have time for climate deniers and laggards.

Unfortunately, while Peter Gutwein could appoint himself the first Liberal Minister for Climate Change, he couldn’t lead his colleagues to support the declaration of a climate emergency.

Nor could he bring himself to even be present during the debate, instead passing off the debate to Madeleine Ogilvie MP.

We brought on our motion to declare a climate emergency in response to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report.

We deliberately worded the motion so it had no politics, just facts. We didn’t want to give the major parties any excuse not to support it, and we were glad Labor members and the Independent Member for Clark did just that.

Every tonne of carbon released into the atmosphere matters. Every chance to act that is ignored by government matters.

The Liberals are on wrong side of history.

Hobart, Launceston, Kingborough and Northern Midlands Councils have all declared a climate emergency, as have hundreds of councils and governments around the world.  It’s hardly radical action.

The Greens know in times of crisis, it is critical MPs work together for this island and its people. There is no greater threat to lutruwita/Tasmania, or the planet than global heating.  We need to acknowledge humanity is in an emergency, which requires an emergency response.

Delay is the new denial and that’s what we got from the Gutwein Liberals in Parliament today.
