Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson
The greyhound racing industry has lost its social licence. Both Labor and the Liberal parties are on the wrong side of history.
It was deeply saddening, yet unsurprising, to see the old parties once again join forces to support this cruel industry.
Both the old parties talked about a modern industry and improving animal welfare standards in this evening's debate. The reality is that hundreds of dogs are dying every year in the industry's name.
In the early hours of this morning, New South Wales legislated to end greyhound racing, led by Liberal Premier, Mike Baird.
Unfortunately, Premier Hodgman lacks the courage and leadership of his NSW counterpart.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government stood beside the Labor Opposition and backed in the state sanctioned, taxpayer funded, cruelty ridden greyhound racing industry.
The Greens will continue to fight for the dogs in the greyhound racing industry who have no voice.
The industry in Tasmania must know that, despite tonight's vote, its days are numbered.
Australia is one of only eight countries in the world that still allows greyhound racing.
