remier Hodgman’s decision to approve Tassal and Huon Aquaculture’s mass expansion into Storm Bay is a shocking indication of his government’s disregard for the community. He has an obligation to locals, commercial and recreational fishers, and all Tasmanians to release the final report of the Marine Farming Panel.
Without seeing the Panel’s report, you can’t escape the conclusion the approval of the salmon industry’s industrial-scale privatisation of Storm Bay was a done deal.
Marine Farming Panel hearings were held, apparently, to gather scientific evidence and community concerns about the marine impacts the massive expansion. Locals and concerned organisations participated in good faith, but no participant received any response from government.
It’s almost as though the submissions people posted to the Panel went straight into the shredder.
The salmon industry is desperate to settle in new waterways, regardless of the impacts on others affected. They have to exit Macquarie Harbour and the D’Entrecastaux Channel waters they have seriously degraded.

asmania’s lack of political donation disclosure laws means we don’t know how much the salmon industry gave to the Liberals at the last election.
They are giving away public waterways to their corporate mates in secret deals.
The State government can’t be trusted to listen, so the Federal government must ensure this proposal is rigorously assessed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act with full opportunity for people to have a say.
