Tasmanians should be bracing themselves for massive further public subsidies to the woodchip industry after Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding today confirmed that the costs of turning Hobart into a woodchip export port 'would not be pretty', Greens Infrastructure spokesperson Nick McKim MP said today.

"Mr Hidding is continuing the government’s secrecy on forestry subsidies by refusing to reveal exactly what he means by "it won't be pretty".

"Clearly we should all brace ourselves for more of the money being ripped out of our schools and hospitals being thrown at the looming pile of woodchips for the Hobart waterfront."

"We can now confidently predict that tens of millions of dollars will be spent turning Hobart into a woodchip export facility at the same time that teachers and nurses are being sacked in their hundreds," Mr McKim said.
