The Greens warmly welcome Police Minister, Michael Ferguson’s announcement that he will introduce legislation to remove the offence of begging from the statutes.

This long overdue change to the law will ensure no person who feels reduced to asking strangers for survival money faces an unpayable fine or jail.

We are thankful that Minister Ferguson and his colleagues have seen the light.

This will mean a fairer Tasmania for people living in poverty, but there’s a lot more work for us all to do.

Rosalie and I look forward to debate on the Bill and voting for a more just Tasmania.
