More Schools Should Be Safe Schools

Media Release - Wednesday, 24 February 2016, Andrea Dawkins

Andrea Dawkins MP | Greens Education spokesperson

The federal government's attack on the Safe Schools Coalition is threatening the safety of young LGBTI people in Tasmania. Safe Schools offers a suite of information from individual and family support for young LGBTI people, to resources for teachers and students.

This is a program that is run in partnership with Working it Out, and with the support of the Human Rights Commission and Australian Children’s Commissioner. We need it run in more of our schools.

16 Tasmanian schools have signed up to the Safe Schools program. That's 16 safe places for our young people to learn, while feeling supported and loved for who they are.

School can be a tough place for any young person working out who they are. Professional support is crucial for reducing confusion around issues of gender and sexuality.

The carefully orchestrated campaign by those who would have this program rolled back, is based on fear and intolerance.

Prime Minister Turnbull's review should acknowledge the value of Safe Schools Coalition programs and recommend more schools sign up.
