Minister Rockliff and the state government should send Prime Minister Turnbull a strong message, by increasing support for the Safe Schools program.

The state government needs to reaffirm their commitment to Safe Schools and help more schools get involved.

There are students in every Tasmanian school who are grappling to understand their own sexual and gender identity, as well as that of their friends. Only 16 Tasmanian schools have adopted the Safe Schools program to help them.

The north, north-west, and east coast regions of Tasmania are all being supported by one person who works two and a half days a week. Minister Rockliff needs to be doing more to help the program providers, and encouraging more schools to participate.

Extra state government support would encourage more schools to participate in the Safe Schools program. This would mean fewer young, LGBTI Tasmanians struggling with who they are, especially in our more conservative, regional areas.

Prime Minister Turnbull's review will reveal just how important the Safe Schools program is, and how much additional funding it needs. Minister Rockliff should get ahead of the game and increase state support now.
