Tasmania’s future is clearly not in coal mining, but you wouldn’t know that from the Premier’s contribution in Question Time today.

We asked if his government really is prepared to sacrifice farmers, tourism operators, the concerns of Tasmanian Aborigines, the integrity of our clean, green brand, and undermine this island’s contribution to a safe climate, in order to ramp up coal exploration, extraction and exports.

His answer will provide no comfort to Tasmanians who are worried about the many impacts of coal mining.

How hard can it be in a time of climate emergency for the leader of a renewable energy state, with a hard won clean, green brand, to take a position on new coal mines?

Clearly, too hard for Will Hodgman.

There is no future in thermal coal, not for Tasmania and not for a safe climate.

The Premier and his Liberal colleagues are letting down every Tasmanian who knows this to be true.

There should be a prohibition on new thermal coal mines in Tasmania, and that’s why the Greens will be moving for one in Parliament tomorrow.
