With the Amazon and the Arctic ablaze, the Greenland ice sheet melting at an alarming rate, and the NSW coastline ablaze in Winter, all responsible political leaders need to stand with young people fighting for a safe climate and hope for the future.
The ACT Government has formally expressed its support for students and everyday Canberrans who’ll be out in force for the global Strike for Climate on 20 September.
With thousands of young Tasmanians expected to converge on Parliament’s lawns and Princes Square on 20 September, the Premier and his Liberal team need to stand with the kids.
The Greens will, as ever, be there to let young Tasmanians know we are with them in their struggle for a safe climate and that we’ll fight for their future every day of the week.
Wouldn’t it be great if all politics could be put aside on 20 September, and all Liberal and Labor politicians joined the Greens to stand with young people fighting for their future?
At the past two Strikes for Climate in Hobart, there wasn’t a Liberal MP to be seen. That sends a terrible message to the kids who are desperately looking for leadership in increasingly worrying times.
Young people know the house is on fire. They know too well the planet is in a state of climate emergency.
They need to know the grown-ups will be standing with them.
I hope Will Hodgman and his team are up to the challenge.
To see all political parties represented, alongside the union movement which will be there in numbers, will send a strongly positive and hopeful message to young Tasmanians.
Hope, leadership and positive action is what they need in this time of climate emergency.
