Dr Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Justice spokesperson
The Greens welcome the Attorney General‘s indication in GBE hearings today the Government is considering removing the gag on people who are under guardianship and administration orders.
Every person should be able to tell their story. As it stands, Tasmanians who are covered by a guardianship order are prevented from speaking publicly about their situation.
Silencing dissent is never the best way forward. The Attorney General indicated she sees guardianship gags for what they are, and we are hopeful she will remove that provision from the statutes.
The Attorney General was sending positive signs about guardianship reforms in hearings today. Words, however, are not enough.
Those under orders need change, and we hope the Attorney will prioritise this legislation as soon as parliament returns.
