Rosalie Woodruff MP | Greens Planning spokesperson
On behalf of the Greens, I thank Greg Alomes for his years of service as Executive Commissioner of the Tasmanian Planning Commission.
The Tasmanian Planning Commission is a key legal pillar of the Tasmanian planning system.
Planning underpins the framework of our state’s social, cultural and environmental landscape. The truly independent application of the planning scheme is critical to ensuring the intrinsic values of a place are protected.
Increased development within Tasmania means we need the unencumbered oversight of the TPC more than ever.
We question the timing and motivation for this proposed review, and its unexpected announcement rings alarm bells. The TPC’s independence must be preserved during and following the government’s review.
The key role the TPC plays has already been compromised by a lack of resources under the Hodgman Government. Increased funding for this independent body is essential - there is certainly no room for cuts over the next two years.
We need a strong independent Planning Commission so it can continue to uphold the sustainable development objectives that protect what makes Tasmania special.
