The Tasmanian Greens look forward to seeing Premier Rockliff at Equality Tasmania’s vigil to support LGBTIQ+ Tasmanians.

Asked by the Greens about the hateful anti-trans event being held on Parliament Lawns today, Premier Rockliff said no Liberal MPs would attend. That’s good news.

The Premier also pointed to his track record of promoting inclusion, diversity, and fairness. If Jeremy Rockliff is serious about his values, he will show up and support trans and gender diverse Tasmanians.

The hateful language targeted at trans people is growing louder locally, nationally, and globally. All political leaders must stand up, and push back hard.

The need to stand with the LGBTIQ+ community has only been heightened by the abhorrent events in Melbourne on Saturday. Strong leadership is non-negotiable.

Many trans and gender diverse Tasmanians feel scared, traumatised, and hurt right now. It would send a powerful message, and provide much needed support for the community, for the Premier to stand with them today.

While the Premier undoubtedly has a busy schedule, this event is happening on democracy’s doorstep. We urge Jeremy Rockliff to find even five minutes in his schedule to demonstrate his solidarity with LGBTIQ+ people.

The Greens will, of course, be there.
