Expert sentencing advice has once more fallen on deaf ministerial ears.
The Attorney General is ignoring her own Sentencing Advisory Council report on sentencing for sex offenders by pushing ahead with mandatory sentencing.
She is prioritising political outcomes over good community outcomes. Mandatory sentences are expensive and ineffective.
This is a comprehensive report, three years in the making, and should not be ignored.
The Attorney General has a duty to respond in full to all the issues raised by the Sentencing Advisory Council before embarking on any legislative reform.
Her response should be more meaningful than parroting an oversimplified tough-on-crime mantra.
