The Greens warmly welcome the results of a comprehensive opinion poll of Tasmanian attitudes towards greyhound racing. The poll provides unequivocal evidence that a strong majority of people are opposed to this cruel industry and the taxpayer funding it receives.

We are glad to see so many people from all walks of life and political persuasions are passionately opposed to greyhound racing. This industry is consistently responsible for terrible harm to beautiful and innocent dogs, so it’s no wonder Tasmanians are against it in such large numbers.

These poll results should be a loud wake-up call to the Liberal and Labor parties, who to date have simply tried to outdo each other in their cheerleading for a cruel industry. It’s clear the position of both parties is completely out of step with the views of their own voters, and feelings of the wider community.

While both of this state’s major political parties are focused on propping up the greyhound racing with millions in taxpayer dollars, the Greens are proud to stand alongside animal advocates in calling for change. We understand that for as long as this industry exists, dogs will continue to be harmed.

It’s well past time for the Liberals and Labor to listen to the community’s strong opposition to greyhound racing, for the industry to stop receiving taxpayer dollars, and for it to be banned as it is in most places around the world.
