Cassy O'Connor MP | Greens Leader
The TCCI’s ‘Tasmania Report’ confirms what many Tasmanians are feeling. The wealth gap is widening under Will Hodgman’s leadership.
The tracker makes it clear that on issues like housing, health and child protection, disadvantage has increased since the Liberals were elected in 2014.
It is unsurprising and distressing that under the Liberals we have gone backwards on two thirds of the key indicators.
Under a Greens’ Minister, housing waiting lists were at their lowest in a decade and now an additional 1,200+ people are waiting for a home. We had the wait time for public housing down to 19 weeks. Under the Liberals it’s at 67 weeks – more than 16 months.
The elective surgery waiting list is ballooning and hundreds more children are in out-of-home-care. Inequality is increasing and the gap between rich and poor is widening.
If you’re not a Liberal party donor or corporate, you’re not a priority for Will Hodgman’s government.
On top of the social failures in the TCCI report, the Hodgman government is also pursuing anti-protest laws, privatising wilderness, public infrastructure and buildings, and the summit of kunanyi for a cable car. It’s also funding coal projects, and preparing to ramp up logging in high conservation value forests.
The Tasmania Report makes is clear – there’s no such thing as responsible future thinking in this government.
Will Hodgman’s legacy will be deepening inequality, privatised common wealth, playing politics with democratic principles, driven by blatant self-interest and pandering to the big end of town.
