The latest employment data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals more job losses in Tasmania, the highest youth unemployment and lowest participation rates in the nation.
The increase in unemployment numbers across both Trend and Seasonally Adjusted figures, falls fairly at the feet of the Tasmanian Liberal Government. Eighteen months in office, the days of blaming previous administrations have surely passed.
While TT Line has employed an unknown, but high percentage of imported workers for the Spirits' refurbishment, an estimated 7000 young Tasmanians are without work in Tasmania. That is 7000 human stories of untapped potential and future socio-economic vulnerability.
The Treasurer can try to spin his way out of this one, but those young people won’t buy it and nor will the hundreds of public sector workers his government has made redundant, or the local tradespeople and small business operators who believe too many of the big contract jobs are not going to Tasmanians under this government.
Before the last election, the Liberal rhetoric was ‘jobs, jobs, jobs’ and ‘a brighter future’.
Jobs are being lost under Hodgman Government and there is no sign of a brighter future as a result of any Liberal policy to date.
