A fortnight from today, the Gutwein Government plans to end protections for tenants against rent increases and evictions, in the middle of a pandemic.

While most Australian jurisdictions have extended tenancy protections until the end of March, the Gutwein Government appears to have caved in to pressure from property owners and looks set to cast renters onto the ‘mercy’ of a rental markets where rents are rising and vacancy rates are the lowest in the country.

This is both heartless and short sighted.

The Greens are fielding calls from tenants who are terrified of what lies ahead after the protections are prematurely ended.

The Premier must give this matter a serious rethink if he wants to avoid major social fallout while the economy is still struggling and a deadly virus rages across the globe.
