The US Supreme Court's finding that state bans on gay marriage in the US are unconstitutional is a triumph for equality, and increases pressure on Australia to legislate for marriage equality.

The dominos are falling around the world at an ever increasing rate, and it's well beyond time that Australia caught up.

Marriage in Australia is a civil institution that belongs to our people, not to the churches which continue to oppose marriage equality.

MPs around our country should heed this decision, particularly the words of Justice Anthony Kennedy, who said

"Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilisation's oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."
