It has been revealed that Tasmanian public hospitals will still perform surgical terminations with a referral from a General Practitioner.

Dr Bastian Seidel, President of the RACGP, stated clearly on ABC radio that some GPs are still successfully referring women to the Royal Hobart Hospital to access terminations.

It has also been brought to our attention that the RHH has been given instructions not to educate the GP community about this longstanding policy. This is despite GPs consistently requesting direction on the matter.

If this is the case, it is a scandalous dereliction of duty to women, and a clear indication that the Right within the Liberal Party are gagging healthcare professionals based on their ideological beliefs.

Access to terminations through the public hospital system must be an option for women.

Women have the right to choose, and access health services. It must be made clear to GPs and Tasmanian women what the options are when it comes to reproductive health.

The Minister for Health and Premier now have an obligation to confirm that Tasmanian women can access this service through the public hospital system.

Dr Seidel's statement raises the question - why did the Liberals mislead Tasmanian women at numerous press conferences and in public statements?

It would be scandalous if women who are already being forced to make a traumatic and life changing decision are bearing the brunt of an ideological and factional dispute within the Liberal Cabinet.
